Site description

Prominent knoll on the southern outlet of the Qa Shubayqa. A rectangular modern building, possibly reusing stone from earlier phases, is mostly intact. It overlays a small mound with a dense lithic scatter, including diagnostic material. A crescent-shaped

Geographic & taphonomic context: Prominent basalt outcrop surrounded by a deflated tell. The site is close to the wadi and several small gullies cut through it, eroding the in situ cultural material. The desert pavement surrounding the site appears well preserved but

Heritage value & conservation: High. This is a multi-period site which appears to have well-preserved, stratified archaeological deposits. The prehistoric elements are potentially significant because of their early date and association with a "desert kite".

Remarks: Discovered by OM in 2014; revisited and intensively surveyed 2018. General photos taken on 2018/05/07 using Nexus9 A.

SHUBS108.1

Dense and concentrated lithic scatter bounded by the bedrock outcrop to the west, gullies to the north and south, and the wadi to the east.

Geographic & taxonomic context: Appears to cap an in situ deflated tell, but is being eroded by surface flow and may be mixed with material washed from the wadi.

Finds & chronology: Lithics, groundstone, egg shell and ancient bone; plenty of modern rubbish but a conspicuous absence of pottery.

Surface collection: gridded

SHUBS108.2

Rectangular dry stone structure. Unroofed. Daub on the internal walls suggests a recent date, but the walls have begun to collapse.

Finds & chronology: Modern (19th/early 20th century?) but may have reused building material from earlier structures.
